Commitment to Diversity

My commitment to diversity through reporting and advocacy

Commitment to Diversity

Na Pueo and myself have an ever-expanding commitment to representing a plethora of identities, perspectives, cultures, and more. Given that our community is a mosaic of unique individuals with their own stories, I am devoted to representing this diversity and showcasing student interests across the board. From sports, political events, think pieces, to light-hearted features, Na Pueo has something for everyone. As Editor-in-Chief, my goal is for the school newspaper to be a voice of the people, a mirror that reflects every person and their values. To do this, we collaborate with clubs, student leaders, and individuals of all kinds to broaden our reach and expand our connection to the community that inspires us to write.

My commitment to diversity and inclusion trickles down all the way to the early stages of the writing process. When reviewing story pitches and potential sources, I implore my staff to consider each angle. I ask, who would benefit from having their voice heard? How can you consider each angle of the story, whether you resonate with it or not? Where can you go to further understand the issue you’re reporting on? Asking these questions and seeking the answers is just one way I ensure Na Pueo is a powerful voice of the people– one that students, parents, and faculty can rely on.

In my own journalism experience, I dedicate myself to narratives that are often overlooked. The complexity of them intrigues me, inspiring questions I didn’t realize I had and motivating me to answer them. For example, when I was writing about the prevalence of victim blaming and rape culture, I realized I had to ensure my article would accurately reflect the feelings of women on campus. To do so, I attended a DEI Club meeting and spoke with the members about their thoughts on these issues. I listened with delicacy, making sure I understood and accurately conveyed the gravity of their statements through my writing. Without their insight and my attendance at this meeting, my article may have lacked the intricacy and sensitivity that it required. This article later went on to receive an HHSJA Best in State Opinion Writing award, and though the recognition is gratifying, the knowledge that I accurately and impactfully conveyed an issue so close to members of my community was a far greater prize.

Diversity is hard to measure, but beautifully intricate and necessary to society. As I continue my career as a journalist and conclude my time as a writer for Na Pueo, I will persist in my goal to be a catalyst for change, and represent the communities I am a part of.
